Learning How to be a Reader Again
How many times has someone asked you “What do you like to do in your free time” and you’ve responded with “Oh, I like to read,” but when was the last time you sat down and got lost in a good book? When was the last time you actually engaged with the storyline of a fictional novel – with good plot twists and turns?
Are you still a reader if the last book you read was last year, or even years ago?
Thankfully, I have read multiple books this year, but still, I feel as though I am not a complete “reader” anymore. Growing up, I loved reading. It was my main hobby – Percy Jackson, The Hunger Games, Divergent – all books that shaped me as a kid, but somewhere along the line, I grew up and became old.
Now, I’ve been trying to get back into reading, but it doesn’t feel the same. The characters stay young, but I grow old. However, I did start reading more fiction with older characters (rather than just YA) which has helped me start to rediscover my love for reading.
I think what makes reading difficult now a days is the fact that it’s not as spontaneous as it was when I was young – being able to read after class or once I finish my homework. Now it feels like an appointment that has to be scheduled in advanced, and honestly, I think that’s what takes the joy out of it. But I guess that’s what adulting is…
It’s currently the end of September, so there’s only 3 months left in the year. Even though I am busy with school and work, I really want to pursue being a reader again, and to keep myself accountable, I plan on writing and posting more.
My goal is to publish a blog post every two weeks, and to post at least once a week on Instagram. If you’d like to follow along on my reading journey, check out @theolympianlibrary on Instagram, and stay tuned for the next blog post!
